Aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky was designing bombers for the Russian Empire when World War I broke out. Nowadays, the company he founded in the United States makes the "choppers" that transport U.S. presidents. This is the story of how the "father of the helicopter" crossed the Atlantic and made it big -- before designing the first aircraft to make regular flights across the major oceans.
As the US military is focusing on the Russian and Chinese threat, the Arctic becomes an ever more important region. The bountiful natural resources reportedly existing under the endless ice of the Arctic make the contested region highly desirable for all contestants — and there's a lot of them.
In addition to the US, the European Union, China, Russia, Canada, and the United Kingdom all present some claim to the Arctic and are claiming sovereignty over portions of the plentiful natural resources that are hidden underneath the ice.
US special operations units, thus, have every interest to prepare for action in an arctic environment since they are at the tip of the spear of the American military.
In September, a Special Forces mountain team from 1st Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, participated in exercise Valor United 20. The exercise, which brought together special operations and conventional troops, took place in Seward, Alaska. Its aim was to boost the experience and expertise of the participants in arctic warfare and increase the interoperability between special operations and conventional forces.

The participants focused on patrolling, arctic, alpine, and glacier movement, crevasse rescue, and long-range communications under the austere conditions of the arctic environment. Regarding the last aspect of the training (long-range communications), the Special Forces team's communications sergeants were able to send high-frequency messages from their positions to their headquarters in Okinawa, more than 4,400 miles away. In doing so, they tested their ability to securely transmit a message over an extremely long distance without being compromised. It's important to remember that in a near-peer conflict, the enemy's capabilities compete with or match those of the US military, unlike what has been happening in the Middle East for the past 20 years where US troops have been fighting a technologically inferior enemy.

While they were in the area, the 12-man Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) had the chance to work alongside the 212th Rescue Squadron and assist the Air Commandos in wilderness search and rescue missions.
"This was a great opportunity to refine previous Small Unit Tactics training and expand our proficiency to conduct arctic operations in an austere mountain environment," said the ODA's team sergeant in a press release.
Training offers units the opportunity to test tactics, techniques, and procedures, the utility of gear, and the rationale of established concepts in different environments. For example, a soldier moving and fighting in the arduous arctic environment needs significantly more calories than a soldier who sits on a forward operations base most of the day and goes out on a direct action mission at night or from a troop who is training a partner force. Thus, exercises like Valor United 20 are a great opportunity to answer the "what" and "how" questions units might have about operating in different geographical environments.

Army Special Forces soldiers aren't the only ones who are getting additional arctic warfare training. The 75th Ranger Regiment, arguably the world's premier light infantry special operations unit, has been sending troops to the Cold Weather Operations Course (CWOC) with increased frequency.
The Army has recognized the increased importance of and emphasis on arctic warfare by introducing the Arctic Tab. Since January, soldiers who successfully complete the Northern Warfare Training Center's Cold Weather Leaders Course (CWLC) are awarded the Arctic Tab. This decision sparked some controversy since many feel that another tab would diminish the value of the preexisting ones, such as the Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Honor Guard Tab, or Sapper Tab.

Whether or not you agree with the popular theory that the 1988 action picture "Die Hard" is really a Christmas movie, you'll have to admit that NYPD detective John McClane is Bruce Willis' greatest role.
There have been four sequels of varying quality over the past decades, but it had been seven years since Willis had played the part. That changed over the weekend when a new "Die Hard" movie showed up on YouTube.
"Die Hard" 2020 is actually a commercial for DieHard, the iconic battery brand formerly owned by Sears and now sold by Advance Auto Parts. The spot brings back a pair of iconic characters from the original movie.
McClane's car won't start and he heads to an auto parts store for a new battery. He runs into the original movie's computer hacker Theo (Clarence Gilyard Jr.), who's still out for revenge 32 years later.
Theo sends a posse of musclebound thugs to finish off the detective, who crashes through the store window to buy his new battery. After escaping through the ventilation system, he runs into limousine driver Argyle (De'voreaux White), who's finally paid off the same car he was driving in the first movie.
As they try to get back to McClane's broken-down muscle car, Theo runs them down and crashes into the limo. The DieHard battery takes a bullet but still works when installed and they crank up the car for an escape.
Will Theo get his revenge or will McClane escape again with a few more scars but still in one piece? You'll have to watch for the result.
If you're shocked that Bruce was willing to play John McClane in a commercial, he's got some thoughts for you.
"I've never done any sort of commercial with the John McClane character, but Advance Auto Parts brought an idea to integrate DieHard the battery into the 'Die Hard' story through a short film that's authentic to McClane and both brands," Willis said in a press release.
"Advance approached this like a motion picture -- the script is clever, the production intense and the spot is entertaining," he continued." This is what 'Die Hard' fans expect. I think they will dig the DieHard --'Die Hard' mashup."
Back in the day before its release, the movie title was a clever play on an iconic brand name. Over the years, the movie became a brand that's probably bigger than the battery ever was. And now we've come full circle: A battery looks to get a boost from a movie that once got a boost from the battery.
Enjoy the spot and don't get your back up. Bruce's movie career got jump started by DieHard back in the day and now he's returning the favor.

This is how to stay calm and centered during election season.
Election anxiety is real. More than two-thirds of Americans surveyed said that the upcoming presidential election on November 3rd is a source of significant stress. This is no surprise, as this election season has, for numerous reasons, been the most polarizing and contentious in recent history. Add this to the COVID-related stress we're all feeling and it's a lot to handle.
With Election Day quickly approaching, it's very understandable to find yourself more anxious, more on edge. It's also easy for those feelings to manifest as shortness or anger aimed at the people we love. Of course, that is the last thing our families need or that we want to provide them. So how do you keep yourself healthy and present? Take some deep breaths and follow the suggestions laid out below. Because, as with everything in 2020, the election will drag on for a lot longer than we anticipate.
1. Maintain the Foundational Four
In times of high stress and anxiety, the fundamentals are more important than ever. According to Vaile Wright, Ph.D., Senior Director of Health Care Innovation with the American Psychological Association, it's critical, then, to focus on the "Foundational Four": getting sufficient sleep, eating healthy, staying active, and keeping connected socially. Interrogate yourself: Am I sleeping enough hours? Am I reaching out to friends? Is my diet helping me feel energized? Wright adds that, on top of these, you should also add activities and routines that fill you back up when you're feeling burnt out. You know yourself better than anyone else. Now's the time to really make sure you're giving yourself what you need.
2. Identify What’s in Your Control — and What’s Not
It's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of uncertainties in the world today. But uncertainty is always a constant and we must all learn to focus on only what we can actually control. So ask yourself: What do I have control over? What don't I? Write them down as you do so. "Make two lists on a piece of paper," says Wright. "On the left, write down the things that are out of your control. On the right, write out what things you can control — including the things that can distract you from what's stressing you and can engage you, like listening to music or watching a movie." This list can form the basis of your self-care toolkit. "In a moment of anxiety, you don't have to think about what you need to do to feel better," Wright says. "Pick something from your list."
3. Do the Things that Are in Your Control — Like Voting
When you made your lists, did you include "Vote" in the right-hand column? "Voting is you exerting your agency and control over something you do have control over — your vote," says Wright. "After you vote, you'll feel less stressed. You'll have permission to take a step back so there won't be that pressure to be so connected." You're not going to ignore what's happening, of course, but doing your part can help you moderate how much attention you're giving the election.
4. Understand How You Cope
Do you know how you cope? It's smart to really think about the things that help you destress and be your best self. Coping skills, per Wright, fall into three buckets: cognitive, physical, and sense-based.
- Cognitive: Puzzles. Reading. Card and board games "These all require you to use your noggin," Wright says. "A family activity like a scavenger hunt with clues to figure out combines mental and physical."
- Physical: These are activities that get your heart pumping. Yep. General exercise falls into this area. But don't box yourself in if that's not your style. "My favorite physical stress-buster is impromptu dance parties in the kitchen when we're cooking," Wright says. "Find opportunities to try something new."
- Sense-based: These are activities that have you focusing on touch, taste, smell, and sound. Think: taking a hot shower. Lighting a scented candle. Drinking a cup of coffee or tea. Squeezing a stress ball. "For some people having a rubber band around their wrist and snapping it is a way to distract themselves as they focus on their body," Wright says.
Understand which category — or combination of categories — helps you the most and carve out time to make them a part of your day.
4. Limit Your Media Consumption
News, news everywhere. But not a moment to think. Doomscrolling, or the act of constantly scrolling through one soul withering news story after another, contributes to anxiety. Now is the time to be very aware of your social media and news viewing habits. Reduce your stress by limiting how much time you're spending on social media and news sites. "Stay informed, especially at the local level, but be mindful of your time online," Wright says. "That means being mindful of when, how much, and what type of information you're consuming."
For starters, turn off your phone's push notifications. "Most of us don't need to know late-breaking news," Wright says. "You don't realize how often you're getting distracted all day long." Instead, set aside time to get caught up on the news — like lunch.
Another good tactic: Use your phone's settings to set limits that cut you off when you've reached your fill of social media or news sites.
And, while this is easier said than done, avoid what you know stresses you out. "If pundits on TV get your blood boiling, try reading your news online instead of watching it," Wright says. "With the 24-hour news cycle, you're exposed to negative images and hear the same things over and over — most of it conjecture. Go with what works best for you."
Remember the Foundational Four? That's why it's smart to avoid scrolling before bed. "You need at least an hour away from your phone before going to sleep," Wright says.
5. Step Away From Your Phone
Disabling push notifications is one thing. But it's crucial to schedule phone-free. As hard as it may be to go offline, you'll feel better if you do so. Do what it takes to disconnect for stretches of time. "Don't rely on willpower," Wright says. "Leave your phone in another room."
"If you prioritize quality time for you and your family, being on the phone is not quality time," Wright says. "Set some rules for device use as a family. And if you don't let your kids use theirs at dinnertime, you shouldn't use yours, either."
6. Set Your Expectations for Election Night
With this particular election, we might not have results for days or even weeks after November 3rd. Your mindset should account for this likelihood.
"Go in with the expectation of not knowing who the president will be the day after the election," Wright says. "With that established, it'll be easier to weather the period of time when we're waiting and things are uncertain."
"It comes back to focusing on the basics: taking care of yourself, taking care of your family, using your coping skills, and focusing on the things that are in your control,' Wright says. "There's not much we can do about it if it goes to the courts. Maintain your stability."
7. Model Self-Care for Your Kids
Kids are intuitive — they'll notice if you're stressed — so when you are taking measures for your own self care, tell your kids what you're doing and why. "Explain why you're turning off the news, why you're sitting down to do a puzzle together, how taking care of yourself is important," Wright says. "You're going to get stressed in life. If you're overwhelmed, tag out and have your partner take over. Demonstrate emotional well-being and ask for help when you need it."

The Air Force has been busy this summer. From providing the latest class of recruits to Space Force to issuing better fitting body armor to women airmen, it seems like the protectors of the sky are really looking to expand and develop on its commitment to its force. This comes after the push in 2018 for Air Force defenders to get updated weapons, along with revised training and fitness standards.
Now, security airmen are next in line to receive a uniform upgrade. Soon, they'll be issued new special ops-like helmets. This next generation of ballistic helmet is just the latest initiative that the Air Force is taking to ensure its personnel remains safe.
This new helmet is going to replace the older and far less-adaptable Advanced Combat Helmet. The ACH is what security forces currently wear, and many airmen have complained about its bulk and weight. Adding to the challenges is that the ACH is designed for ground units, so airmen have struggled with it, and in some cases, have had to outfit and modify it with bulky additions to accomplish different mission sets.
Not only will the new helmet come with better padding, built-in railings to easily attach accessories, but they'll also be lighter and cooler. The Air Force Security Forces Center is now sending out new ballistic helmets as it phases out the ACH.
The 71st Security Forces Squadron, located at Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma, was the first squadron to receive the helmet. Soon airmen everywhere will receive the upgrade.
An Air Force press release said that the initial response to the new helmet has been positive. Master Sgt. Darryl Wright, 71st SFS logistics and readiness superintendent, said that the new version is the "most agile helmet" he's worn in 19 years.
The helmets are part of the Air Force Security Forces Control initiative to modernize not just weapon systems but also individual protective gear. Included in this refresh is contingency support equipment and deployable communications systems, both of which will be paramount to successfully defeating the enemy in future conflicts. In the future, the Air Force plans to roll out a newly revised M18 modular handgun system, M4A1 assault rifle, M110A1 semi-automatic precision engagement rifle, M320A1 grenade launcher, and modular, scalable bests.
"We're identifying salient characteristics of the best individual equipment industry has to offer at the best value to achieve standardization across the force," said Lt. Col. Barry Nichols, AFSFC director of Logistics. "This effort is instrumental in keeping Defenders throughout the security forces enterprise ready and lethal with procurement of the most cutting-edge and innovative equipment available in order to accomplish missions safely and effectively."
These changes all come after the Air Force's Year of the Defender 2019 exercises, where the service conducted a detailed and extensive review of all security forces. This review explored areas that could be improved upon, both in terms of equipment and gear to tactics, training, and general morale boosts. To date, the Air Force has successfully worked through over 900 specific items that needed to change and has spent almost $200 million to update their gear.
The Air Force currently field about 25,000 active-duty security forces airmen. There are an additional 13,000 in the Air National Guard and Reserve components. Of the forces 38,000 airmen, about 98 percent are enlisted. This aligns the entire branch of the Air Force with the Army's lightest light infantry unit.
Brig. Gen. Andrea Tullos, career security forces officer, said that the Air Force has "expeditionary roots," and that the branch is "a blend between light infantry and a military police company."
Collectively, these big changes are helping the service gain air superiority over the peer adversary that could potentially pose a big threat to the military. As the Air Force continues to look toward the future and the likelihood of conflicts with either Russia or China, the Air Force needs to be able to pick up the slack safeguarding forward-deployed squadrons instead of relying on ground forces. This new helmet upgrade is yet another step to making sure that can happen.
Looking for a ridiculous fitness challenge to keep you on track this winter? Or maybe you're just tired of the same old boring lift routine and need something new. Well, friends, let us introduce you to one of the most insane things to come out of CrossFit ever – the Burpee Mile Challenge.
You read that right – burpees for an entire mile.
The challenge isn't so much about competing for a specific time, as it is one of those things you can say you've done and cross off your list. Like running the Red Bull 400 or completing a Ragnar, doing the Spartan Death Race, marathon rucking, or ultramarathoning.
So let's talk about this challenge – what it is, the benefits of it, and how you can safely train to complete it.
The Burpee Mile challenge isn't one of Crossfit's better known WODS (Workout of the day) – it doesn't classify as a Hero WOD that pays tribute to military and first responders, and it's not one of the Girl WODs, but it's definitely a benchmark. Doing burpees for an entire mile will test not just your physical ability to do over 800 burpees but also your mental toughness as well. First, the official rules: You must cover one-mile using burpees only. You can jump forward as far as you want for each burpee, but you're not allowed to walk forward. So that's on track to be a complete, full mile of burpees. Gross.
But the sneaky trick here is that you can jump forward as far as you want (or can). That means all your movement doesn't have to come from burpees alone. That's key if you're really considering this challenge.
The best part is you don't need any special equipment – just a stretch of distance to measure your progress. Gloves are a good idea if you're doing this on anything other than soft ground since your hands are likely to get destroyed. A good goal time should be around 2 to 3 hours for beginners (that's anyone who's new to the painful love of burpees), 1.5-2.5 hours for intermediate burpee lovers, and for folks who knock out 100 burpees a day just for fun, your time should be less than two hours.
Keep in mind if you've never done a burpee in your life, this might not be a good challenge for you to try.

So what are the benefits and what's the point?
Well, the benefits are scant, to be honest. Sure, you'll get a really good cardio because, of course, that's going to happen when you perform so many burpees and broad jumps. But you'll also fatigue your entire body, since burpees are a full-body movement. The combination of great cardio and improved muscle endurance will definitely put you one step closer to becoming stronger, leaner, and faster.
Benefits aside, the point is that the Burpee Mile is a workout that you're going to want to quit … over and over and over again. It's mentally challenging, just like running a marathon or doing a Spartan Race, and that's the whole point. Challenging your mental stamina is all about perseverance and the Burpee Mile will definitely help with that.
Things to consider
A track is best for all these burpees because you'll be safer than on the road, and it's easier to measure distance. Make sure you have water and snacks like fast-acting carbs set up at various points along the route. You're definitely going to need to refuel at least once during this challenge because it takes so much out of you.
As for clothing – long pants are best since you're dropping to the ground. Knee sleeves can be a good idea, too, if you have those. No matter what, though, make sure you have a pair of gloves on – otherwise, your hands are going to get destroyed.
Don't start off too fast. Just like with any other endurance race, save your go-go juice for when you really need it. Keep your jumps measured. Don't try to jump too far. That just wastes energy and you'll fry your legs.
Of course, the most common mistake is failing to train properly for this weird challenge. Don't expect to walk onto a track and perform two hours' worth of burpees right out of the gate. Work toward this goal by adding in several sets of burpee broad jumps to your existing routine. You know you're ready to try the challenge when you can do 45 minutes of burpees without dying.
In 2019, retired Army Colonel Claude Schmid founded the nonprofit Veteran's Last Patrol. Its mission is to forge vital connections and support for hospice veterans in their last days on earth, honoring them as they complete one last patrol.
"My last assignment on active duty I was the Chief of the Wounded Warrior Flight Program, which was an operation where we brought back our casualties from overseas. I recognized that when someone is in great adversity, they, more than ever, need friendship and companionship," Schmid said. He explained that when he retired, he remembered his mother spending time visiting patients in hospice. It was there that he decided to devote his time to honoring veterans in their last days.
Schmid recognized that many nursing home and hospice care residents were deeply lonely and struggling. Knowing that veterans who served this country at great personal sacrifice were experiencing that didn't sit well with him. "We decided we'd put teams together nationally to bring friendships to veterans in hospice care… When you go into end of life, it's nationally to bring friendships to veterans in hospice care… When you go into end of life, it's one final fight and their last patrol," he explained.
This is where active duty members and retired military can lend their support, one last time. "The veterans' community is particularly bonded because of the special work and abilities we have. When veterans move away and fall out of those connections they may be hurting more than most because they are used to that teamwork and support network," Schmid explained. "Our focus is this mission, the goal of bringing them friendships," Schmid said.
The core of this nonprofit is to promote volunteerism and provide financial assistance to veterans in need. Veteran's Last Patrol partners with medical providers to connect volunteers with veterans in hospice care. With many of these volunteers being veterans themselves, it opens the door to sharing stories of the patrols of the past, one last time.
"The national media covers the stories of veterans that have passed away and no one knew they served until they are in the mortuary. The question was, 'What about before they passed away?'" Schmid said.
Veteran's Last Patrol also does formal honor ceremonies for the veterans and their families. "There's been a number of times where within days of that ceremony, the veteran passed away. The family will tell us that they never had a better day than that day in the latter part of their life," Schmid shared.
"Veterans are about service. We've served each other and our nation and this is one way you can continue to serve. I think it can instill future military service for the younger generation, too. As they see this kind of care throughout the life of the veteran and that deep commitment, they might be inspired by that," Schmid said.
As the holiday season quickly approaches, Veteran's Last Patrol has an easy call to action for every American to immediately and truly thank these veterans for their service. Operation Holiday Salute is a program to collect cards and letters for veterans in hospice for Christmas. By taking five minutes to write a message to a veteran, you could be making the world of difference. "It's all about bringing holiday cheer – their last holiday cheer that these veterans will receive in their lives," Schmid explained. Last year, Veteran's Last Patrol sent over 4,000 letters to veterans in hospice care.
This year the goal is 10,000.
With the pandemic still impacting things like volunteering in person, writing a letter is a simple and an accessible act of intentional kindness. GivingTuesday is on December 1, 2020, and this is the perfect way to give back to a population that dedicated their lives willingly for our freedoms.
Although its headquarters is located in South Carolina, Veteran's Last Patrol has teams in 14 states. Anyone can raise their hand and pledge to do this in their own communities by simply contacting Veteran's Last Patrol through their website. Schmid hopes that one day they'll cover the country, serving veterans everywhere in their last days.

There is no better way to truly say, "Thank you for your service," than by giving your time to honor a veteran in hospice. I-77 freeway fire, driver unaware, officers put out fire
Two ladies are alive today thanks to the quick action of five police officers from the Columbia VA Health Care System.
On Oct. 5, Columbia VA Police officers Major Calvin Rascoe and officers Colt Clark, Ronald Turner, Robert Evans and Shawn Bethea were returning to the Columbia VA from training. Rascoe observed fire and smoke coming from a vehicle traveling north on Interstate-77. The driver and passenger were unaware of the fire coming from the undercarriage of their car.
Rascoe activated his vehicle's blue lights and siren to get the driver's attention to pull over. The police officers quickly jumped into action to save the two ladies in the car.
Clark and Turner led the ladies to a safe area away from the car. Turner called 911 to request fire and emergency rescue and Bethea took care of traffic control.
Took three extinguishers to put out the fire
With the ladies safely rescued from the car, Rascoe and Evans attempted to put out the fire. Rascoe emptied a five-pound fire extinguisher on the engine and undercarriage and Evans emptied a second 2.5-pound extinguisher to battle the fire on the engine.
With flames still blazing from the undercarriage, Rascoe grabbed a third fire extinguisher and finally extinguished the fire just as the Lexington Fire Department and local Emergency Management Service arrived on the scene.

"Our focus was to save the two ladies in that burning car," Rascoe said. "I appreciate these guys 100 percent. They did an impeccable job. They reacted and did what they are trained to do to make sure people are safe. I believe if God had not placed us there at that particular moment, the outcome would have been tragic."
David Omura, Columbia VA Health Care System director, said "The heroic work our great police service does inspires me. I hope that if I am ever driving down the road and I have an emergency, like my car being unexpectedly on fire, the VA Police are there to save the day."
